Making children’s safety our highest priority is the starting line to a race where every step we take ensures their bright and secure future.
Every Child Matters | Southern Virginia Child Advocacy Center
Our Journey
Since 1993 the agency has been providing and developing programs and services that respond to and combat family and community-based violence.
The Southern Virginia Child Advocacy Center provides the physical setting to conduct a community-based, multidisciplinary response to child abuse and neglect.
To achieve our mission, we advocate for safe, permanent homes for abused and neglected children; coordinate a multidisciplinary community-based response to child abuse and neglect; and offer educational and prevention programs.
Our Community
The CAC provides a centrally located, child-friendly facility that offers the benefit of more immediate follow-up on child abuse reports; better coordination of medical and mental health assessments and
treatments; fewer victim interviews; and a consistent continuum of support services to victims and their non-offending caretakers.
We currently serve the counties of Franklin, Henry, Patrick, and Pittsylvania, as well as, the cities of Martinsville and Danville.
Our Impact
Each year we serve hundreds of children in our region. The impact of this coordinated approach includes:
- Children with a CASA volunteer tend to perform better academically and behaviorally in school
- Children with a CASA volunteer reported significantly higher levels of hope.
- Children receiving mental health services showed an improvement in functioning and effective coping strategies
- Children receiving mental health services showed a decrease in post-trauma symptoms
- Parents/caregivers were able to verbalize their understanding of their children’s traumatic experiences and/or behaviors
- Parents/caregivers identified ways in which they have responded to their children’s emotional experiences and/or behaviors in a developmentally appropriate manner
- Community members participating in the Darkness to Light training will indicate an increased awareness of the local conditions that impact family and community-based violence and how to report their concerns
- Over 95% of caregivers indicated their initial contact with the CAC was a safe environment where the complex process of helping the child would be explained and the staff could and answer any questions from the child or caregiver
- 96% of the individuals who have received services provided by the CAC noted they were satisfied with the services they received
- 97% of the individuals receiving services provided by the CAC indicated they would refer others to our agency for services
